A review has been done on our recently published article, “Surgeons’ perspectives on operating room waste: Multicenter survey,” by Dr. Gilbert Upchurch. He provided an exceptional insight into the importance of recognizing operating room waste.

January 31, 2022 - Surgeons' Perspectives on Operating Room Waste

We are happy to announce that our research, “Surgeons’ perspectives on operating room waste: Multicenter survey,” was published in the journal Surgery. This collaboration between UVA and UCSF details the perspectives and opinions of surgical attendings and trainees of both institutions regarding perioperative waste. Surgery has awarded us the distinction as one of the "Best in Surgery" as they found the work done in the article innovative!

RichmondInno, a source of local news for Richmond, Virginia highlighted PeriOp Green as an upcoming company with innovative technology focused on the problem of operating room waste.

November 3, 2021 - "Sustainable health systems actively seek to eliminate the harm of health care on the environment"

Health Affairs Forefront, a leading source for health policy research, published an essay by co-founder Matthew Meyer explaining the potential of health system sustainability centers to catalyze the adoption of sustainable business practices throughout the global economy. Sustainability in healthcare is just the start.

October 27, 2021 - iTHRIV Pilot Translational and Clinical Studies Proposal Approval

Our proposal for a pilot trial was approved by the iTHRIV PTC Program! This program is a Virginia statewide collaborative research network, consisting of Carilion Clinic, Inova Health, the University of Virginia, and Virginia Tech, with the aim of funding pilot trials intersecting clinical and translational research. This opportunity is a huge step towards further development, scaling, and application of our software. More information on this program can be found here.

One of our own team members, Dr. Matthew Meyer, recently had an article of his published in STAT! Our team is lucky enough to have a variety of individuals with a multitude of skills, and we greatly appreciate Dr. Meyer's work within the intersection of healthcare and sustainability.


July 13, 2021 - Milestone in Data Capture from Actual Operating Rooms

PeriOp Green completed recordings of 40 surgeries within the UVA Health System, to help with the scaling and refinement of our detection algorithms, as well as baseline data for comparison to manual annotations.

May 18, 2021 - Acceptance into Venturing Project Squared

PeriOp Green was accepted into Venturing Project squared, a summer program directed by the Batten Institute at the University of Virginia. The program provides direction in terms of instituting a corporate roadmap.

April 24, 2021 - Recipient of the Environmental Stewardship Subcommittee Grant (ESS)

The Environmental Stewardship Subcommittee aims to promote sustainability amongst the students, faculty, and staff within the University of Virginia. We were generously awarded from the ESS Grant due to our investigative technological achievements.

April 13, 2021 - Acceptance into Hoos Venturing

PeriOp Green was accepted into Hoos Venturing, a program provided by the Batten Institute at the University of Virginia that gives guidance to startup ventures regarding the establishment of corporate infrastructure.

March 12, 2021 - Recipient of the Green Initiatives Funding Tomorrow Grant (GIFT)

The GIFT Grant is funded by the Student Council’s Sustainability Committee at the University of Virginia, with the hopes of encouraging students to solve sustainability issues. PeriOp Green was awarded by the GIFT Grant because of our technological development and innovations.

January 12, 2021 - Proof of Concept

After a good week dedicated to the precise annotation of photos and videos of a handful of single-use, sterile surgical items, we have a proof of concept model from the mock OR in our lab. Using dataloop.ai as the engine (thank you!), we used the annotated photos and videos to train a computer vision model. We were quite impressed with the result including identification of duplicate (gloves) and overlapping items (stapler on gloves).

November 13, 2020 - Top 5 in UVA eCup Concept Competition

PeriOp Green was selected as one of the top five for the Health Care Services and Technologies track in Concept Competition for the University of Virginia's Entrepreneurship Cup. With our award, we were given the opportunity to apply to the following stage of the competition - Discovery Competition.
